Documentary Portrait Stories
Some stories are better photographed than posed.
My documentary portrait work focuses on real people, real environments, and the moments that happen between the planned ones. Rather than directing every movement, I observe, anticipate, and photograph what unfolds naturally—looking for the gestures, expressions, details, and connections that tell a larger story.
The result is intimate, honest photography that captures not just what someone looks like, but something about who they are and the world around them.
This way of working also shapes how I approach every portrait session. Years of photographing people in unscripted moments have taught me to anticipate expression, read light quickly, and recognize the moments when someone stops performing for the camera and simply becomes themselves.
These stories have been photographed throughout Washington DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia, and reflect my ongoing interest in people, place, and the stories we carry with us.
